PANAMA CERTIFIES ITS FIRST VESSEL BY ISPS CODE

The Panama Maritime Authority has expedited its first Safety Certificate to "UNI-PROBITY" vessel, owned by Evergreen company, as established by the International Code for Protection of Vessels and port installations known as ISPS, English abbreviation.

The ISPS was approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), as an amendment to the Safety Agreement for Human Life at Sea (SOLAS/74) and it will be in force by July 1, 2004.

Panama, as a member of the IMO Council, Category A, maintains an strict enforcement policy of the guides that rule the worldwide maritime activity in which, likewise, maintains itself as the flag leader.

Vessel "UNI-PROBITY" was built in 1997, it entered the Panamanian Registry in year 2001; it is dedicated to the loading of containers and has a gross record of 17,887 tons (TRB).

As part of future actions to comply with ISPS Code, Panama Maritime Authority created the Maritime Protection Department as a special unit in charged of keeping the adequate application of said Code, giving immediate answers to the commitment of the obligations that Panama, as a maritime administrator, acquired in the fulfillment of the established lineaments in the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
