The Directorate General of Merchant Marine of the Panama Maritime Authority (PMA) began its external audit under the model of ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management.

The PMA, through this direction is in charge of managing the world's largest fleet, providing an international service, considering that from Panama and their various technical offices and merchant marine consulates, Asia, America and Europe is coordinated.

For this purpose, the certifying entity Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance Inc. (for its acronym in English LRQA), sent the Mexican engineer Mr. José Wong, in order to check the compliance of  standard, verification of the controls, the impact that has had the system, the implementation of the standard, in the following areas: Planning, Attention to Customer, Monitoring and Improvement, Ships Registration, Navigation and Maritime Safety, Government Inspections, Human Resources; Competence and Training, Purchasing Management, Suppliers Control, Documentation Control and Management Indicators Revision.

The ISO 9001:2008 Recertification reaffirms, as explained Mr. Jorge Barakat Pitty Administrator of the PMA “It is very important, because through this document our services quality are certify, also the day by day effort of the employees and collaborators of this institution, in where under this new administration this commitment is reaffirms with a transparent management modernization of all the systems "starting with the consular area, looking always to improve continuously the services.”

Similarly, Mr. Fernando Solórzano, Director-General indicated that for Panama, under the ISO 9001:2008 Standard Quality System Certifications represents the consolidation of our image internationally providing multiple benefits, since the country is reaffirm as a leading in ships register around the world. Also pointed out that, with this recertification, it express the confident that exist, to be audited externally, demonstrating our ability to satisfy the customer, all focused on achieving the highest degree of productivity and efficiency.

LRQA is the leading certifier  worldwide house , a subsidiary entity of the Lloyd's Register Company, created in 1760 and that since then, it is remain by quality and Safety not only on Maritime Traffic but Terrestrial Installations with high risk, issuing their own standards adopted and accepted by all the countries where it operates.

The ISO 9001:2008 standard pursues the documentation of all processes, customer satisfaction, an objective management and more consonant with the world trade development. In terms of the objectives and the institutional plans that aim to more training of the human resources committed to the continuous improvement.
