PANAMA BOOSTS ITS LOGISTICS PLATFORM IN THE MIDDLE EAST
The Administrator of the Panama Maritime Authority (PMA), Mr. Jorge Barakat Pitty, participated in a panel of experts that discussed the future of the port and logistics industry, in the framework of the convention MIDDLE EAST MARITIME SEATRADE, which took place from 28 to 30 October in the UAE.
Within the frame of the country’s growth as a result of the expansion of the Panama Canal, Mr. Barakat presented Panama as an alternative to investing in the ports and the logistics industry. Mr. Barakat’s words awakened great interest among those who were present. He highlighted the investment projections in the area of Puerto Armuelles and Chiriqui Grande, through a bidding dual concept of port structures on both coasts.
As part of this working trip, the Administrator of the PMA met with Mr. Mohammed Ali Ahmed, Chief Operating Officer, at DP World, UAE Region, to whom he explained the diverse alternatives that Panama is developing in logistics matters. These alternatives represent potential investments for the development of the logistics in the region. DP World operates 65 port facilities around the world; many of them are located in Latin America.
Mr. Barakat held also a meeting with Mr. Abdulkareem M. Al Masabi, Vice President of Port Operations at Abu Dhabi Ports Company. The purpose of this meeting was to get a better understanding of the operations of the company and to talk about Panama’s potential to become the Logistics Platform of America.

The 3-day-long event, which is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, UAE is the largest of its kind in the regional calendar.

During the convention, Mr. Barakat Pitty was accompanied by HE Mr. Eduardo Fonseca, Consul General of Panama in Dubai and by Mr. Tomas Avila, Secretary General of the PMA.
