THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THE PANAMA MARITIME AUTHORITY MET WITH THE GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER OF SHIPPING

The Administrator of the Panama Maritime Authority (PMA), Mr. Jorge Barakat Pitty received the important visit of Mr. Peter Hinchliffe, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS). During his visit, the high representative of the entrepreneurs of the international maritime sector expressed the persistent concern due to the possible entry into force of the International Convention on Ballast Water Management (BWM 2004).

Mr. Hinchliffe requested the support of the PMA to prevent the coming into force of this instrument, prior the dispelling of various uncertainties regarding its implementation. He highlighted the non-criminalization of owners who have installed approved equipment on-board, the lack of technology that meets the requirements of the legal instrument and the possible introduction of domestic and /or regional requirements.

Meanwhile Mr. Barakat Pitty expressed his desire of maintaining good relations between the two entities. He underlined his gratitude for ICS’s recognition of the improvements in the quality of services currently offered by the Panama Maritime Authority.

Mr. Arsenio Domínguez, Panama’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to IMO, Mr. Fernando Solórzano and Ms. Margareth Mosquera, Director and Deputy Director of the General Directorate of Merchant Marine, as well as Mr. José Luis Ortega, Head of SEGUMAR Bureau in Panama also attended this meeting.
