THE PANAMA MARITIME AUTHORITY CONFIRMS SUPPORT TO MR. KI-TACK LIM, SOUTH KOREAN CANDIDATE FOR SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL MARITIME ORGANIZATION

The support of the Panama Maritime Authority and of the Republic of Panama to the South Korean candidate for Secretary General of the IMO was confirmed over a courtesy breakfast hosted by Mr. Jorge Barakat Pitty, administrator of the Panama Maritime Authority to Mr. Cho, Byoung-lip, South Korean ambassador in Panama.

The administrator of the Panama Maritime Authority, accompanied by part of his management team, announced this decision to the ambassador, based on several of Mr. Ki-tack Lim's statements, during his visit to the Panama Maritime Authority, such as his work program and projections. Mr. Ki-tack Lim also expressed his commitment to maintaining the highest global standards in maritime matters. He also aims to promote a good understanding among IMO’s member countries.

South Korea nominated Mr. Ki-tack Lim, Chairman and CEO of the Busan Port Authority, as its candidate for the General Secretariat of the International Maritime Organization. Other candidates running for this position include representatives from Denmark, the Philippines, Cyprus, Kenya and Russia. The election of the next Secretary General – who will succeed Mr. Koji Sekimizu (Japan) – will take place during the 114th session of IMO Council. The Council will gather in London (England) from June 25 to July 3, 2015.

Mr. Cho, Byoung-lip, was grateful for the trust placed on the candidate nominated by his country. This is a further indication of the remarkable diplomatic relations existing between the two countries.
