En una operación conjunta, personal del Ministerio de Ambiente (MiAMBIENTE), sede central y las regionales de Panamá Oeste y Metropolitana, en coordinación con la Autoridad Marítima de Panamá (AMP), el Servicio Nacional Aeronaval (SENAN) y la Unidad Táctica de Operaciones Antidrogas (UTOA) de la Policía Nacional, realizaron un recorrido de verificación en tres puntos estratégicos, en atención a una denuncia sobre la presencia de una mancha en aguas marinas del Golfo de Panamá.
En esta jornada de inspección, realizada por vía marítima y aérea, se atendieron tres puntos de la provincia de Panamá Oeste, siendo el primero, un área cercana al Puerto de Vacamonte, allí no se evidenciaron manchas ni irregularidades ni indicios de contaminación.
Por otra parte, en un segundo punto, no se detectaron manchas ni rastros de contaminación en la superficie marina.
Para la verificación de la denuncia, estas inspecciones se realizaron vía marítima y con sobrevuelos por el Servicio Nacional Aeronaval y con dron del equipo técnico de la Dirección Nacional de Verificación al Desempeño Ambiental (DIVEDA), constatando la ausencia de anomalías.
Mientras que, en el tercer lugar del recorrido, cercano a Puerto Caimito se identificó la presencia de un producto flotante en la superficie del agua, donde personal técnico de la AMP procedió a la toma de muestras para su análisis en laboratorio, a fin de determinar la naturaleza de la sustancia. Como medida preventiva, se aplicó un dispersante para hidrocarburos en el área afectada. Adicionalmente, la AMP implementó herramientas de biorremediación para la limpieza del vertido identificado en el sitio. Cabe resaltar que no se observaron embarcaciones en las inmediaciones durante la inspección.
MiAMBIENTE, la AMP y la Aeronaval reiteran su compromiso con la comunidad en dar respuesta inmediata ante cualquier amenaza contra el ambiente, especialmente los entornos marinos. Además, reafirman que continuarán con las investigaciones correspondientes para determinar las causas que originaron la denuncia.
De igual manera, se implementará operativo de fiscalización en los puertos de la zona, con el propósito de verificar el cumplimiento de la norma y asegurar que las actividades que requieran cuenten con las herramientas correctas de gestión ambiental.
In a coordinated effort, personnel from the Ministry of Environment (MiAMBIENTE) — encompassing the central office and the regional branches of Panama Oeste and the Metropolitan area — in collaboration with the Panama Maritime Authority (PMA), the National Aeronaval Service (SENAN), and the Tactical Unit for Anti-Drug Operations (UTOA) of the National Police, conducted a verification operation across three strategic locations. This initiative was launched in response to a report concerning the presence of a stain in the marine waters of the Gulf of Panama.
The inspection, carried out via maritime patrols and aerial surveillance, focused on three sites within the province of Panama Oeste. At the first location, near the Port of Vacamonte, no stains, irregularities, or indicators of contamination were observed.
Similarly, inspections at the second site revealed no evidence of marine surface pollution or anomalies.
To ensure a comprehensive assessment of the report, inspections were conducted using maritime patrols, overflights by SENAN aircraft, and drone surveillance operated by the technical team of the National Directorate for Environmental Performance Verification (DIVEDA), all of which confirmed the absence of environmental irregularities at the first two points.
At the third inspection site, near Puerto Caimito, a floating substance was detected on the water’s surface. Technical personnel from the PMA immediately proceeded to collect samples for laboratory analysis to ascertain the nature of the material. As a precautionary measure, a hydrocarbon dispersant was applied in the affected area. Additionally, the PMA deployed bioremediation techniques to assist in the cleanup of the spill. It is noteworthy that no vessels were detected in the surrounding area at the time of the inspection.
MiAMBIENTE, the PMA, and SENAN reiterate their unwavering commitment to protecting the environment and ensuring rapid response to any threats, particularly within marine ecosystems. They also affirm that investigations will continue in order to determine the root cause of the reported incident.
Furthermore, enforcement operations will be intensified across local ports to verify compliance with environmental regulations and to ensure that all activities are properly equipped with the necessary environmental management tools.
