La Autoridad Marítima de Panamá (AMP) comunica que, a través de su Dirección General de Marina Mercante (DGMM), da seguimiento a las investigaciones relacionadas a un incidente registrado este miércoles 9 de septiembre con el buque tanquero de crudo (Crude Oil Tanker) New Andros, de bandera panameña, mientras transitaba por aguas territoriales de Irak.
De acuerdo con reportes preliminares llegados a la oficina de Protección Marítima, el tanquero habría sido impactado por un tipo de dispositivo, hasta el momento no identificado, provocando un incendio a bordo, que fue controlado y extinguido exitosamente por botes de rescate iraquíes.
Según la información disponible, no se han reportado víctimas ni heridos entre los 22 miembros de la tripulación.
El incidente ocurre en un contexto de elevada tensión militar en la región, situación que ha generado alertas y reportes sobre riesgos para la navegación comercial en el área. Asimismo, la United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) informó sobre otros incidentes que involucraron a varios buques mercantes en el Golfo Pérsico y el Golfo de Omán durante la noche.
La AMP continúa monitoreando los riesgos que enfrentan los buques de bandera panameña que transitan áreas de conflicto bélico, aplicando los protocolos pertinentes bajo el Código ISPS (Código Internacional para la Protección de los Buques y de las Instalaciones Portuarias) y el Convenio Internacional para la Seguridad de la Vida Humana en el Mar (SOLAS).

The Panama Maritime Authority (PMA), through its General Directorate of Merchant Marine (DGMM), is following up on investigations into an incident involving the Panamanian-flagged crude oil tanker New Andros, which occurred on Wednesday, September 9, while the vessel was transiting Iraqi territorial waters.
According to preliminary reports received by the Maritime Protection Office, the tanker was reportedly struck by a type of device that has not yet been identified, causing a fire on board. The fire was successfully brought under control and extinguished with the assistance of Iraqi rescue boats.
According to the information currently available, no fatalities or injuries have been reported among the vessel’s 22 crew members.
The incident occurred amid heightened military tensions in the region, a situation that has prompted alerts and reports regarding risks to commercial navigation in the area. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also reported other incidents involving several merchant vessels in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman overnight.
The PMA continues to monitor the risks faced by Panamanian-flagged vessels transiting areas affected by armed conflict, implementing the relevant protocols under the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code and the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).
