El Complejo Logístico de Puerto Armuelles toma forma reportando un avance del 70% en la construcción de su estructura principal: el nuevo muelle multipropósito de alto calado natural que permitirá que vuelvan a anclar los megabuques.
Así se informó en el Gabinete Logístico que encabezó el presidente de la República, José Raúl Mulino, y en donde se anunció la integración del Aeródromo Nemesio Ledezma como parte de la estrategia nacional para fortalecer el sistema portuario y reactivar la economía del occidente del país.
Durante la sesión, se dio a conocer que el muelle registra un 70% de avance y está concebido como un eje dinamizador de la actividad portuaria, logística y productiva de la provincia de Chiriquí, con impacto directo en la generación de cerca de 2,000 empleos y el crecimiento regional.
Como parte del esquema de expansión del muelle, la Autoridad Marítima de Panamá (AMP) informó que se incorporaron al proyecto los terrenos del Aeródromo Nemesio Ledezma, con una extensión inicial de 22 hectáreas y 1,200 metros cuadrados adicionales. Esta superficie representa la primera fase de un total proyectado de 50 hectáreas; en consecuencia, restan por integrarse unas 28 hectáreas para completar el polígono definitivo destinado al desarrollo integral del complejo.
Luis Roquebert, administrador de la AMP, explicó que este proyecto se desarrolla en tres fases claramente definidas: la construcción del muelle, la expansión territorial y el desarrollo del parque logístico.
La nueva infraestructura constituirá una plataforma logística de gran escala, con áreas de almacenamiento, procesamiento, distribución y servicios de valor agregado, que incrementará de manera significativa las capacidades operativas del puerto.
Roquebert precisó que la terminal está diseñada para atender buques de entre 300 y 330 metros de eslora y hasta 13 metros de calado, con una infraestructura estimada entre 150 y 300 metros lineales equipada para operar como terminal multipropósito. Podrá manejar carga contenerizada mediante buques tipo “feeder”, graneles sólidos, carga seca, carga general, carga líquida —incluido aceite crudo de palma—, así como cruceros, minicruceros y embarcaciones pesqueras.
Su ubicación estratégica permitirá atender carga proveniente de las provincias de Chiriquí y Bocas del Toro, así como del sur de Costa Rica, haciendo de éste un nodo clave para el comercio regional. El proyecto contribuirá además a descongestionar otros puertos nacionales, diversificar rutas logísticas y fortalecer la resiliencia del sistema portuario panameño frente a las exigencias del comercio internacional.

The Puerto Armuelles Logistics Complex continues to take shape, reporting 70% progress in the construction of its core structure: a new deep-draft multipurpose pier designed to once again accommodate mega-vessels along Panama’s Pacific coast.
The update was delivered during the Logistics Cabinet session led by President José Raúl Mulino, where authorities also announced the integration of the Aeródromo Nemesio Ledezma into the national strategy aimed at strengthening the port system and revitalizing the economy of western Panama.
During the session, officials confirmed that the pier’s 70% completion marks a significant milestone. The project is envisioned as a driving force for port, logistics, and productive activities in the province of Chiriquí, with a direct impact on the creation of nearly 2,000 jobs and broader regional growth.
As part of the pier’s expansion framework, the Autoridad Marítima de Panamá (PMA) announced the incorporation of the Aeródromo Nemesio Ledezma lands into the project. The initial phase includes 22 hectares plus an additional 1,200 square meters. This represents the first stage of a projected 50-hectare development, leaving approximately 28 hectares to be integrated to complete the final polygon designated for the complex’s comprehensive expansion.
Luis Roquebert, Administrator of the PMA, explained that the initiative is structured in three clearly defined phases: construction of the pier, territorial expansion, and development of the logistics park.
The new infrastructure will serve as a large-scale logistics platform, incorporating storage, processing, distribution, and value-added service areas, significantly enhancing the port’s operational capacity.
Roquebert further detailed that the terminal is engineered to accommodate vessels between 300 and 330 meters in length, with drafts of up to 13 meters. The estimated infrastructure, ranging from 150 to 300 linear meters, is equipped to function as a true multipurpose terminal. It will handle containerized cargo via feeder vessels, solid bulk, dry cargo, general cargo, and liquid cargo—including crude palm oil—as well as cruise ships, mini-cruise vessels, and fishing boats.
Strategically located, the terminal will serve cargo flows from the provinces of Chiriquí and Bocas del Toro, as well as southern Costa Rica, positioning Puerto Armuelles as a key regional trade node. The project will also help ease congestion at other national ports, diversify logistics routes, and strengthen the resilience of Panama’s port system in response to the evolving demands of global trade.
The new Multipurpose Pier at Puerto Armuelles is poised to become a strategic platform for logistics development, regional integration, and sustainable economic growth in Panama—already drawing the interest of major Japanese corporations.
