MULINO VISITS THE WORLD’S LARGEST AUTOMATED TERMINAL: TUAS PORT IN SINGAPORE

President of the Republic José Raúl Mulino toured Tuas Port on Sunday, October 4, as part of his visit to Singapore, getting a firsthand look at a facility poised to become the world’s largest fully automated container port.

During his visit, President Mulino described the project as a model for Panama, highlighting the strategic parallels between Singapore’s role as a maritime gateway in Asia and Panama’s position as the logistics hub of the Americas.

The tour also offered a glimpse into Singapore’s decades-long ambition to consolidate its port operations into a single megaport. That vision dates back to 1977 and is now becoming a reality, with the first of four planned phases inaugurated in 2022 and full completion expected by 2040.

From the Operations Control Center, President Mulino took in the sheer scale of the terminal, which will span 1,337 hectares, feature 66 berths across 26 kilometers of coastline, and have the capacity to handle 65 million TEUs annually.

Located at the western tip of the island, Tuas Port represents a model worth following: a single, highly automated megaport designed to consolidate operations and strengthen efficiency, connectivity and competitiveness. For Panama, it could offer a blueprint for achieving in the Americas the same strategic advantage Singapore has built in Asia.

Panama already stands as the logistics hub of the Americas, supported by an unparalleled combination of assets: the Panama Canal, a multimodal transportation network, the Colón Free Zone and Panama Pacifico.

During the visit, President Mulino received a detailed briefing on the port’s operations and toured the control center that oversees the facility’s activity. Tuas operates without crane drivers, relying instead on autonomous trucks and a fully automated yard that runs 24 hours a day, with performance reported to be 30% faster than a conventional terminal.

Representatives of the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) thanked President Mulino for placing his confidence in the megaproject and highlighted its commitment to sustainable operations. The terminal is fully electric and generates its own power through solar panels installed on warehouse rooftops and cranes.

PSA representatives also emphasized the principles of neutrality and reliability shared by both nations, underscoring a common vision and the strong alignment between Singapore and Panama as maritime nations.

The Panamanian delegation accompanying President Mulino was received by Ong Kim Pong, Group CEO of PSA International; Seow Hwee, CEO of Port Ecosystems and Tuas Terminals; and William Goh, Vice President of Service Excellence.

Representing Panama were Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha; José Ramón Icaza, Minister for Canal Affairs; Sebastián Breton, Panama’s Ambassador to Singapore; and Kristelle Getzler, from the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Competitiveness.

On Monday, October 5, President Mulino is scheduled to meet with Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, respectively. The meetings form part of his Asian tour, aimed at opening new markets, strengthening strategic partnerships across the maritime, aviation and agricultural sectors, and attracting new investment to generate greater employment opportunities for Panamanians.
