El 20 de noviembre, una delegación panameña liderada por Diego Villanueva, Embajador y Cónsul de Panamá en Corea del Sur, realizó una visita a las oficinas de Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), una de las navieras más importantes del mundo. Actualmente, HMM opera cerca de 1 millón de toneladas de registro bruto (TRB) bajo la bandera panameña.
Durante el encuentro, el Embajador Villanueva enfatizó el compromiso de Panamá de mantener una relación sólida y mutuamente beneficiosa con HMM. Entre los temas abordados destacaron el uso de combustibles alternativos y la adopción de tecnologías limpias como pilares para reducir la huella ambiental del transporte marítimo.
Como líder mundial en abanderamiento, la Autoridad Marítima de Panamá (AMP) se erige como un socio estratégico natural para HMM, en la búsqueda mutua de soluciones innovadoras y sostenibles.
Villanueva también se reunió con Lee Hyungchul, presidente y CEO del Korean Register (KR) y con el ingeniero Sergio López, jefe de Segumar en Corea del Sur. El encuentro sirvió como reiteración del compromiso de ambas partes con la comunidad naviera internacional al aplicar los más altos estándares regulatorios.
Por su parte, Carlos Hoyos Boyd, Viceministro de Comercio Exterior de Panamá, también participó en reuniones clave con la Asociación de Armadores de Corea (KSA), liderada por Tae-soon Jeong. Durante estas sesiones, las partes apostaron por un diálogo sobre cooperación marítima, haciendo más fuertes los vínculos comerciales y técnicos entre ambas naciones.

Currently, HMM operates nearly one million gross tons (GT) under the Panamanian flag, underscoring the strong partnership between the two entities.
During the visit, Ambassador Villanueva reaffirmed Panama’s unwavering commitment to fostering a robust and mutually beneficial relationship with HMM. Discussions centered on pivotal topics, including the adoption of alternative fuels and clean technologies as essential measures to reduce the environmental impact of maritime transportation.
As the global leader in ship registry, the Panama Maritime Authority (PMA) serves as a natural strategic ally for HMM, facilitating collaboration on innovative and sustainable solutions that benefit the maritime industry.
The delegation also held discussions with Lee Hyungchul, President and CEO of the Korean Register (KR), and Sergio López, Head of Segumar in South Korea. These engagements highlighted both parties’ shared dedication to upholding the highest regulatory standards and supporting the global maritime community.
Additionally, Carlos Hoyos Boyd, Panama’s Vice Minister of Foreign Trade, participated in high-level meetings with the Korea Shipowners’ Association (KSA), led by Tae-soon Jeong. These sessions focused on enhancing maritime cooperation and strengthening the commercial and technical ties that underpin the growing partnership between Panama and South Korea.
